has anyone ever been in a situation where...
.. they've had to defend themselves or other people? i remember reading a letter in my Martial Arts Illustrated magazine that was written by a man who was trying to find a kickboxer who defended his son from a gang of thugs. what happened was that the teenager was just coming out of a special needs class at a youth centre (or something like that) when this group of thugs came out from nowhere and smacked his books out of his hands. he went down to pick them up but they started punching and kicking him. then the kickboxer came and gave them what for! he even kicked their leader up the backside as they ran away, and he saw that the kid got into a taxi and paid his fare home.

Hi
Id just like to take a second to invite you to post in... other... sections of Budoseek as well the Martial Arts Training subforum.
I think its great that you enjoy posting here, but there are ALOT of other sections here and you may have some better luck with your questions if you post them in a more appropriate area.
This question would probably get better exposure and response in the General or Chat sections.

Wulf-
your posts really are not annoying: you make very good questions.. However, some people who could have some insight to your problems might not never see them because location of question (one can think that training section contains stuff like 'how to practise with free weights'; or 'healthy diet?'..) .. So, if you run up with question about some spesific kata, you might get better answers posting it to karate section; meditation, history, etc. ... well, perhaps philosophy; meaning of kanji, Japanese culture; and so on .. Forums that Sgathak suggested, probably most of people check at least those one - and perhaps those Military/LEO guys have some insight, too ..
Luckily/unfortunately I have not been in situation where there is need to defend other person(s).. that is, I have been in problematic cases with other folks, but those have not escalated up to actual confrontation, sitations have cooled down by talking..

Lol to Posiview and Cliff... but I was serious: It's hard work you're doing, what keeps you going on? Is that you feel you do your duty to mainentance society, or is it some feeling of right and wrong, or just a job that you've picked up and try to do as well as possible?

it was a wake up call for me, personally. it really showed me how far training goes... and doesnt go. i was mugged at gunpoint, and through VERY bad judgement (i once heard somone say "i'll fight for my life, but never my wallet") i fought the guy. well, we did lots of drills in the dojo for defense against weapons, so taking the gun away wasnt a problem. unfortunately the system (or perhaps my own methods of training) only went as far as that. the other guy was much bigger than me, and i guess part of me thought that with the gun out of the way there wouldnt be much going on afterwards... and so ended up in an emergency room with thirty stitches to the head. after that my training became slightly modified.

That was a great example and thanks for sharing it. I try to make that point when I teach LE defesive tactics too. Just because they no longer have the weapon doesn't mean they are not going to fight. It also doesn't mean they do not have another weapon somewhere.

Unfortunately, yes.
This is nowhere near the seriousness of other replies, but I had to intervene at my company's Christmas party 3 yrs ago when two fellow coworkers had a bit too much of Grandpa's cough medicine at were about to go at it(darn Hoosier rednecks!!!) anyway, I seperated them, and thereby avoided either of them spending the night in the drunktank or hospital. They thanked me later after they had sobered up a bit. I just would have hated to see it go any farther as they are both "fishing buddies" and neighbors to boot! This is the one I feel "good" about. That's my little story. Not trying to be a "virtual tough guy" either, just a story.
Best Regards,

Posiview and Cliff, I for one am very glad that you guys do what you do. I have a lot of respect for Law Enforcement. I have even more respect for officers who go out of their way to be as prepared as possible. You guys put your butts on the line everyday for the rest of us to feel safe. Whatever your reasons, I for one, appreciate it.
Teachers and Law Enforcement are the two most under paid professions in my opinion.

One of the secondary reasons I train is for situations that might need me to defend myself or, more importantly, someone I care about. But I have yet had it happen to me.
I remember, when I was in high school, I was going to major in criminal justice. But, that was before I got into computers and that was before I got into math.
