Dr. Moses Powell
Rest in Peace
(Jan 15, 1941 - Jan 22, 2005)
Dr. Moses Powell, a 10th degree black belt is one of the true legends of the martial arts world. He is the founder of Sanuces Ryu, a fighting style that combines his over 45 years of experience in various martial arts. He is a member of both the Black Belt Hall of Fame and the World Karate Hall of Fame. Dr. Powell was the first martial artist invited to demonstrate martial arts at the United Nations and a featured martial arts demonstrator at the New York World's Fair. Dr. Powell was one of the first African-American martial artists to teach the fighting arts to U.S. law enforcement agencies including the Secret Service and FBI. In addition to these great accomplishments, the Benin Empire of West Africa awarded him the international Benin Award in 1972 for his community work and efforts throughout the world.
Dr. Powell is deeply committed to sharing his knowledge and principles with all. He helps ex-offenders by teaching them self-respect, self-control and honesty through the martial arts. To this day, Dr. Powell continues to work with disadvantaged youth and senior citizens around the country. Dr. Powell was featured in "Masters of the Martial Arts", "Warrior Within" and many other films. His Sanuces Ryu system is unparalleled in its combat effectiveness and brute simplicity. Dr. Powell is the consummate martial artist and Sanuces Ryu is the ultimate martial art! He gives all praises to the Creator for His blessings and attributes his success to his teacher, the late Grand Professor Florendo Vistacion, founder of Vee-Jitsu Ryu, who was laid to rest in December 1998.

A True Teacher and Warrior
I just heard the sad news the other day. A true warrior has passed on. Founder of Sanuces Ryu Jiujitsu, Grand Master Moses Powell died this past Saturday - Jan 22, 2005.
Even though he was not a Koran Martial Arts stylist, this did not stop him from sharing with all arts. It is with great sorrow and a heavy heart that I would like to extend condolences to GM Powell's family and students from myself and all the Modern Farang Mu Sul family around the globe.
Sanuces Ryu people here in the bay area are our brothers. Shihan A. Mohamed brought GM Powell and several of his masters here to SF many times, and it was my great honor to have spent such quality time with him on the mats. His "streetology philosophy" was much in line with mine, and we connected right away. BTW, we also worked knife and he certainly knew his knife tactics (serious street stuff). We had some great exchanges...Wow, I'm really going to miss him. He was a huge influence on the development of our art - Modern Farang Mu Sul. The name of his dojo said it all:
"When Worlds Collide"
Rest In Peace great one.

I might not have known him personally but I extend my sincere condolences to the family, friends, loved ones and students of Dr Moses Powell. His performance in "the Warrior Within" was very unique and was one of the great pulls to my interest in Jujutsu.
