Kali/Arnis main component is stick fighting.

Stick grappling? if you have a weapon, why would you want to grapple?

Gene LeBell offers in his books grappling with a club or stick. See any MA magazine for his advertisement.

Sochin is right on with the Dog Brothers.

Whoa, Irish stick fighting?? Never woulda thought. It looks pretty cool to. Not as much flailing around and hoping to hit/not get hit as in some other styles. Im Irish to, so Ill definately have to look into it. Good call...

Grappling with a weapon?? Handy in close quarters, when swinging your stick around is useless or impossible.

Disadvantage of weapon, you can't grab with the hand thats holding it. So, grab with the weapon. Ive seen it to, its pretty cool.

In Gene's books he uses it more for LEO moves and shows you instances when to use the stick to add additional leverage in holds or locks.

You are correct on the range of motion being limited when utilizing the guard.

Is there a style wich focuses on using a stick of about 50" - 60"? Rather than, 6' bo's or 24" short sticks. Or can most styles simply be applied to this? Suggestions?

Hmm, a stick of 50 inches or so sounds remarkably like a jo to me.

Filipino Kali utilizes grappling both against an opponent with a stick, mostly to disarm or strip the weapon but is not with out the capacity to engage in locks, bars, and joint wrenching. Also much of empty hand applications lead to mid-range grappling including that found with arms as well as additional takedowns. Included also is the use of the staff as well as knives and short (25-30") and heavy (50"+) blades/ sticks with similar application of grappling and takedowns.

I had a crazy dream that some members of the Dog Brothers practiced at a park near my house and they were training me in the staff and sticks and everything.

To bad it was just a dream.

Default some questions

The stick is one of mankinds oldest tools and weapons... there are styles of stick fighting found all over the world where there are sticks... and every style has been influenced by cultural combative habits... some are sword arts with a stick instead of a sword and other as designed for especially for sticks, and more often than not a specific type of stick... the question then is what kind of stick fighting are you interested in? striking... grappling... or just plain old fighting... what length of weapon?

some styles use flicking strikes, other long drawn out strokes... some are like boxing with sticks and others are like a dance... there is much to consider...

and in the end... what works is common to all styles...

umbrella blocks, hitting the hand, rushing, etc...

take care,

Yeah, Hocks the man. I consider him one of the superior knife fighters. His military techniques work great. Most other knife styles I see look like they just end up with both ppl dead. But I never knew Hock did anything with sticks, Ill have to look into that.

But so far, I would have to go with the jo. Good for so many things.

Hock was 2 different stick systems. He has his PAC program which is basically his take on the FMA and there is the SDMS system. SDMS focuses on using single sticks (think like riot batons, but not limited to that) for self defense applications.

I believe most styles of Ninjutsu teach hanbo (3' staff) grappling and striking techniques. The short stick is pretty versitile.

Cheers

Unfortunately for that theory getting into close quarters is not that difficult. Grappling with weapons is will happen unless there are rules against it. Personally if the other guy has a stick too I'm rather likely to clinch and possibly takedown, reason - I don't get hit as much, but if I am in control I can still hit the other guy quite nicely
